Palmoil.io Newsletter - January 2025
Our January newsletter keeps you informed of all the latest Palmoil.io features and updates. We have new EUDR, GHG, VDF/NDPE risk assessments and an update on our jurisdictional dashboards.
As we reflect on the past year, we’re incredibly proud of all that we’ve accomplished together. From the successful launch of our Plot Check Tool to a complete revamp of our Dashboard and Website, it’s been a year of transformation and growth. Our Jakarta team also grew stronger. We welcomed new members to the Palmoil.io family. We also had the privilege of connecting with many of you in person at events like POC in Kuala Lumpur, SPOD in Brussels, Spatial Cluster in New York, SEPAWA in Berlin, RT2024 in Bangkok, and SMARTSEED X in Jakarta.
A highlight for us was hosting the Palmoil.io NGO Dialogue in Bogor during Leo and Kris’s visit to Jakarta, strengthening bonds with our friends and partners. Throughout it all, we remained dedicated to our mission, producing almost 1,500 Risk Insights reports on deforestation—a testament to our shared commitment to driving positive change. We look forward to building an even brighter future together in the year ahead.
What’s new?
GHG Data update
We are excited to announce a major update to Palmoil.io that includes the most recent greenhouse gas (GHG) data. This update will enhance the Plot Check Tool and will include annual emission numbers from after 2023, allowing you to measure and track greenhouse gas emissions across the plots you are reviewing. This update is designed to support your efforts to comply with EUDR, as companies and organizations may need to provide comprehensive GHG data related to activities impacting deforestation.
Recap of Palmoil.io 2025 Outlook Webinar
Last week, we hosted the Palmoil.io 2025 Outlook Webinar. Leo highlighted the importance of stronger monitoring and action due to a concerning rise in deforestation in proximity to palm oil mills and industrial plots, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia, based on RADD alerts and annual tree cover loss data.
For EUDR, the delay was also mentioned with a slight emphasis to focus on compliance with Articles 9, 10, and 11 of the regulation, emphasizing risk assessment, mitigation, and due diligence. As delayed implementation provides a window for companies to prepare, but this requires proactive data collection and assessment.
The webinar also showed a live demo of Palmoil.io’s latest updates along with a tease of what’s to come. Feel free to watch it back on demand here. Thank you to everyone who joined us and participated in the discussions. We look forward to our next webinar!
What’s coming up?
Leo goes to POC2025
Leo will be attending POC2025 from February 24-26th at Shangri-La, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If you'd like to schedule a meeting or just to say hi, feel free to reach out here! Presented by Bursa Malaysia Derivatives, the 36th Palm & Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (POC2025) is the premier global event for the edible oils industry. Join key decision-makers and thought leaders as they discuss market trends, industry challenges, and trade opportunities. Don't miss out on this networking experience!
Launch Jurisdictional Landscape Dashboard
Our new Jurisdictional Landscape Dashboard will launch in February. This powerful tool is ready to enhance your analysis of district, province, and village-level data, with a particular focus on palm oil-related deforestation and peat loss risks as well as supply chain links and grievances. Using metrics such as proximity to remaining forests and other key indicators, the dashboard provides a comprehensive view of these critical issues. Subscribers can continue accessing all existing map layers while now benefiting from advanced filtering options through our risk metrics table.
This feature also highlights regions that have achieved or are close to compliance with EUDR requirements. In addition, the dashboard retains essential data, including VDF/NDPE assessments, GHG emissions data, and peat layer information. We’re confident this new tool will help subscribers to identify priority landscapes, enhance research efforts, and guide field investigations. By offering a clearer picture of major actors and key dynamics within a region, the Jurisdictional Landscape Dashboard is designed to support your work in driving sustainable solutions forward.
Tip of the month
Plot List Upload
To analyze hundreds or even thousands of plot locations, you can upload your Palmoil.io Plot IDs directly into Portfolio. Simply compile a list of plot IDs and upload it as a CSV file to your portfolio. This feature is especially valuable for companies with a single point for each plot that they source from. Our analysts will match your points with our plot data and provide you with a list of plot IDs to upload to your portfolio. This enables you to create a private list of all linked plots—an essential tool for conducting your Due Diligence risk assessment. Contact us (info@maphubs.com) to learn more about this service.
Benefit of the month
Mill List Upload
Palmoil.io’s mill list upload feature is a game-changer for companies aiming to meet deforestation-free and legality requirements with ease and precision. By uploading a mill list—using their Universal Mill List (UML) IDs— subscribers gain instant access to comprehensive insights, including deforestation trends, linked grievances, and expert-reviewed risk reports. This tool matches mills to surrounding plots using the eTTP traceability model, offering historical and real-time deforestation statistics within seconds. With secure, customizable Portfolio capabilities, subscribers can screen suppliers, assess risks, and prepare for compliance seamlessly.

Understanding the EUDR
The difference between Article 9 Due Diligence and Articles 10 Risk assessment and 11 Risk mitigation, and what you should focus on in 2025.
The responsibility under the EUDR is shifting more explicitly to Articles 10 and 11. The latest guidance has introduced changes aimed at simplifying compliance requirements, including those related to plots and due diligence statements (DDS).
Notably, the guidance allows for planted areas within properties to be treated as plots and permits the reuse of DDS for multiple shipments. However, these adjustments do not eliminate the obligation for operators to ensure the accuracy of the data being reported. Operators must still verify the validity of plot-level information, assess potential risks beyond the immediate plot area within the surrounding property, and thoroughly evaluate the risks associated with their suppliers. This may include legality risks like land and labor disputes or conversion occurring in another plot within the property.
Additionally, the delays in the implementation of the regulation could result in corresponding delays in the collection of traceability and plot data. This really leaves operators with three approaches to 2025 that we describe below.
The 'do nothing' approach is the riskiest but so is the 'Article 9 only' which focuses narrowly on verifying plots without a thorough check of the property boundaries and a supplier risk assessment. The Palmoil.io approach covers Article 9 but also 10 and 11. It checks your plots against our property boundary data, and gives you access to thousands of supplier, country, and jurisdictional risk assessments.
